Industrial Intern!!

Have u ever had an experience of sitting in a confined space from 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening and doing nothing but trying to figure out what are you supposed to do at this place?? Well, I had one, and it was not for a day, not for a week but a whole month. In short this was what my Industrial Internship was like.

It all began in the month of March when we were told about this intern thing, we had two options, either we could search for a company ourselves or go into Reliance MCN. What my seniors had told me was that an “A” grade in OOP course is what is required to get into DAKC for an internship; well I had one and was at ease till the time the instructor told us that DAKC isn’t being offered this year.

What the hell, I was left high and dry and started looking for some company that would let me in for six weeks. Although the option of doing it in Reliance was always open but I didn’t want to go in there, because personally I feel that it sux ( although I am studying in a college run by these people but still this doesn’t change my views about them). At that moment when all the hopes had died my dad told me that SISL (Siemens Information System Limited) people have accepted me as a trainee for a period of six weeks. Bingo, that was something I had been looking for.

The stage was set and I had to start the internship in June. I had already started imagining myself working in the office, helping in some sort of a project and applying my knowledge that I had gathered after two long years at college. So finally the day arrived, I reached the office way before time so as to start the work a bit early and get used to this office kind of environment. But I had to wait for three hours for the person who was responsible for all the internship stuff. Finally that guy met me, and told me what I am supposed to do. I had to work in a group of eight on a project which had something to do with mobile application , rest of my group members were the permanent employees in their 20’s or so. But the best thing was that I was given a proper seat and a comp to work on, and unlimited net access is always welcome ( the comp was awesome with 1 GB Ram ,3.0 GHz and above that an additional graphics card , What do we have here , a gaming PC or what?).

Nothing much happened on the first day; I had to get my email account activated and get my I-Card and stuff, however my boss gave me some sort of an introduction to the project they were working on. Every thing was stunning, the comps, the people there, the projects, the software tools they were using except for the fact that I was a stranger in this field and whatever my boss told, 90% of it went over my head. I am not sure but I think that my boss realized that I don’t know much about the mobile programming so I was assigned the job of software testing.

Wtf? Software testing? “I am not here to do boring stuff like software testing “, these were the words revolving in my head, but I was not in the situation of dictating terms to my boss and ask for some other interesting work , so I had to accept it, maybe I was expecting too much. Still an hour was left for the departure of cabs so I decided to explore rest of the office. I must admit that it was awesome with designer furniture, great comps, a wonderful library and delicious food, it was really good (better than brijwasi’s thali), there is no other place in this world where you can a non-veg buffet at just Rs.20.

So with not so spectacular beginning I started with my intern with task of software testing assigned to me, every day I was trying to find bugs in other people’s codes, and enjoyed the pleasure of reporting it back to them. Gradually as days passed I started spending a large part of the day either in the library or the TT room (yeah, they had one), life didn’t have anything new to offer anymore.

Now within a few days my internship will end( hopefully with a ‘P’ grade) , this experience has opened my eyes to a new world waiting to engulf us , two years down the line I will be doing the same thing what my group members are doing right now . Right now we are in the college living in a somewhat protective environment, in a sense alien to the world outside. We live our life according to our terms which we decide, but the scenario will change after few years when most of us will be working under some guy accountable to him for the kind of work we do.

I know that all this sounds a bit silly, but you have to experience it yourself in order to realize all this.
